The Founder

Albray Victor Butterfield Snr. D.H.L., N.P., M.B.E., was born in The District of Kew, North Caicos, Turks & Caicos Islands. Among his schoolmates and colleagues, he was given the nickname “Art.” Albray Butterfield Snr., has a great love for sports. His interests include the harmony of family life, taking on challenges, being diligent in business affairs, enjoying a sense of humour with friends and people in general. The enjoyment of teaching is personal satisfaction. “I do have a great love for animals, especially dogs.”

Art was a former Police Officer. With God-given gifts, he was also Chief, Port, Marine, Mechanical Engineer and Refrigerant and Air Condition Technician. Art, loved his country and offered himself as a candidate for the Legislative Council and was elected to represent The Ninth Electoral District, comprising of Kew, Whitby and Sandy Point, North Caicos. He was part of an official delegation that travelled to Washington, D.C., to negotiate the use of The U.S. Currency, as the legal tender for the Turks & Caicos Islands.

He contributed financially to the costs involved in seeking amendments for constitutional changes. Art served three, consecutive, four-year terms as a Member of the Legislative Council. During his tenure, he served as Deputy Speaker, and on various Standing Committees of the Legislative Council: Public Accounts, Administration, Expenditure, and House Rules Committee; as well as other sub-committees that arose from time to time. While in office he contributed immensely to the social and economic growth that has helped to shape the development of the Turks & Caicos Islands.

After retiring from political office he continued to hold other positions of honour in the country from serving as The Chairman of The Turks & Caicos International Billfish Tournament Board of Directors. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Church of God of Prophecy, as Local District Overseer of The Bight and Five Cays Districts; a Sunday School Teacher and is currently serving as Pastor of Faith Tabernacle Church of God, on Leeward Highway, Providenciales.

As one of the island’s most noted Businessmen and an outstanding citizen, Art makes numerous contributions as the need arises for the Aged among us; to the various schools around the islands; scholarships for underprivileged children to attain a better and higher education; as well as studying at a professional level abroad. Contributions are also given towards, computers, and miscellaneous requests for aid. His humanitarian acts have led him and his wife to assist those seeking help in the line of loans, and has created employment for many in the establishment of their businesses. They also funded the materials and labour for the construction of a Medical Clinic in Sandy Point and donated it to The Government of The Turks & Caicos Islands for use by the people of that District.

Her Royal Highness (HRH), Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth The II, as head of the Commonwealth of Nations, awarded Art with The Title of Member of the British Empire (M.B.E.) At Buckingham Palace, London. This award is given for Long and Distinguished Service to the country. He is a Notary Public. Mellen University in Canada awarded Art, an Honorary Degree, “Doctor of Humane Letters (D.H.L.). Art was ordained in Grand Bahama, Bahamas as a Bishop, to The Christian Ministry by Bishops: Wiliiam McKinney, Noel Jones, Bob Porter and Elder Liston Page.

When asked what was considered his greatest achievements, responded with a smile, “raising my children to maturity, having a wonderful wife, being called to the Ministry, and being a successful Businessman for many years; and I do love to be a part of any community project. I love work, I am not afraid of work, and I am a full supporter of a clean environment.” As for Albray Victor Butterfield Snr., D.H.L., N.R., M.B.E.

Fifty-three years ago, Albray and Rosita Butterfield returned to their native country with a vision and passion to utilize their God-given talents, knowledge and skills acquired abroad; to serve the people of the Turks & Caicos Islands and to elevate the standard of living.
